Photo of the Day – Nyhavn

Nyhavn

Nyhavn is a popular entertainment and tourist district in Copenhagen, Denmark (photo by Kenn Stearns)

There’s a certain charm to Nyhavn, a colorful waterfront district of Copenhagen that’s a popular tourist destination. But “colorful” means more than the bright canal-front buildings in the photo above. In its day, Nyhavn was an active harbor best known for pubs, prostitutes, and partying. The infamous reputation has given way to tourism, the old buildings that once housed merchants and brothels are now restaurants, ice cream parlors, and tourist attractions such as canal tour boats. In the summer, music and people are everywhere – the lively atmosphere a stark contrast to the medieval architecture and the wooden boats.

Taking a gondola ride through the canals of Venice can be very romantic, but costly – about $150 for a 40-minute ride at night. Gondoliers must wear a striped shirt, black pants, and closed dark shoes. Gondolas are just under 37 feet long, weigh about 1,300 pounds, and hold up to six people.

Photo of the Day – Kiel Canal in Germany

MS Norwegian Dream flips her lid in the Kiel Canal (photos by Kenn Stearns)

The Norwegian Dream is the largest cruise ship to transit the Kiel Canal on a regular basis. The ship must lower its funnels and masts to maintain clearance under bridges. One of the most interesting canals in the world, this 61-mile waterway in northern Germany connects the North Sea and the Baltic Sea. The ‘Dream’ even has a Kiel Canal fan club. The journey takes almost an entire day and is truly a unique travel experience.
