Photo of the Day – Crawfish Boil

Crawfish Boil

Nothing says springtime better than a crawfish boil (photo by Kenn Stearns)

Crawfish season is from late February to mid-May. Outdoor cooking, Louisiana-style, is a popular way to boil crawfish. I prefer my crawfish purged and washed thoroughly prior to boiling. A Cajun Crawfish Boil recipe works well. Throw in a few red potatoes and corn-on-the-cob. Wash down with you favorite cold beverage, repeat.

Photo of the Day – Blooms

Azalea blooms

Springtime is my favorite time of the year in Houston. Although the annual Azalea Trail happened earlier this month without azalea blooms, they’re everywhere now. Texas wildflowers adorn the highways, especially bluebonnets. White and pink Indian hawthorns blooms are out. Everything has been brown for so long it makes the blooms all that much more appreciated.

I took the photo above a few minutes ago, trying to mix a little of the afternoon sun with the bright color of the buds. The blooms will fire off soon and be gone soon after Easter. In Chinese culture, azaleas are known as the “thinking of home bush” (xiangsi shu). No matter where I travel, when I see azaleas in bloom I always think of home.

Photo of the Day – Songbenders

Joe Gavito

When not all five singer/songwriter members of The Songbenders were available for a gig in the Houston area, our friend Joe Gavito was one of the musicians invited to sit in, along with Troy McConnell. As a show of support for Joe, last night we journeyed to the Crescent Moon Wine Bar in Spring, TX. We enjoyed the group’s performance, seeing Joe, and getting out on a Wednesday evening.

Our 16-year-old son managed to consume an order of beef tataki (seared rare New York strip served over honey-ponzu marinated onions), a 16-ounce bacon-wrapped filet, a serving of molten chocolate cake, a very exotic chocolate bar laced with applewood-smoked bacon, and a serving of Crescent Moon birthday cake (for their one-year anniversary). Yes, he did eat dinner before we left for the night out.
